Silverado Hospice Patient Takes One Final Trip to the Grand Canyon
July 23, 2014
While caring for Silverado Hospice patient, Lawrence Coons, his care team learned of a special memory — experiencing the Grand Canyon with his late wife on their honeymoon. He expressed interest in making one last trip to the Grand Canyon, a special trip that he would share with his daughter and her husband. Lawrence’s condition made it a challenge, his care team swiftly stepped in to take that challenge.
His nurse and social worker worked directly with his cardiologist to coordinate the journey. From medication planning and a mobile oxygen tank to mapping out medical stops and partnering with an Arizona hospice provider, the team planned each detail.
During one planning session, a team of seven gathered with Coons’. In high spirits, the witty, young-at-heart man joked, “I didn’t mean to cause so much trouble, I just wanted to go ride a donkey!” The successful trip was filled with moments that his family will cherish forever.
